Russification must not be the poicy of the European Union

Russification must not be the policy of the European Union. After the protest by the Belarusan society against the broadcasting by the “Deutsche Welle” in Russian language to Belarus the European Commission has announced a new tender on the broadcasting to Belarus again in Russian language. This fact witnesses that the European Commission doesn’t understand completely the situation in Belarus and in Eastern Europe. This fact demonstrates as well the lack of will to understand the situation.

This is wrong. Because this fact witnesses hat the European Union begin to lose its role of the political leader in Europe. The EU refuses to support the main values of the freedom, nation and democracy in Eastern Europe in order to please the interests of the big media companies.

This fact witnesses as well that the EU politicians don’t know absolutely and will not see the situation in Belarus where the Moscow’s henchman Lukashenka had forbidden by his “decries” to use the words “Belarusan”, “popular” and “national” in the titles of the NGOs and newspapers. Lukashenka had ordered to burn the school-books in Belarusan language, his pro-Russian regime had just liquidated c. 80% of the schools in Belarusan language and liquidated the lessons in Belarusan in the high-schools. The regime persecutes the young people which are struggling for the Belarusan language and freedom.

The Belarusan language in Belarus is the main value of the people, independence, democracy and freedom. Many generations of the Belarusan people had struggled for the Belarusan language. The Russian occupants had executed hundreds of the Belarusan writers and many thousands of Belarusans because the Belarusans had been loyal to the Belarusan language.

Now the official Russian newspapers write in Putin’s Russia as follows: “The Belarusan language is a language of the international relations between the scoundrels” (newspaper “Yezhednevnyje Nowosti”, 2005-8-26). Nobody has commented, criticized or begged pardon for this insult. This is the Putin’s policy. Does the European Union support this policy?

The EU politicians don’t understand democratic Belarus as well as don’t understand that they are supporting in Belarus the former Soviet obscurantists which are declaring the democratic phraseology, the Russian generals which had suppressed the freedom in Belarus and Lithuania, the former members of the Lukashenka team which are speaking now about the democracy in order to receive the money from the Occident – they didn’t do absolutely nothing for the democracy and freedom in Belarus.

The Belarusan people could tolerate this activity. But nobody will tolerate the russification made by the Occident. The EU politicians are making a big mistake. If they will continue to ignore the Belarusan language democratic Belarus will be obliged to take the categorical decisions on the necessity to have the information support from the Occident.

We – the Popular Front – represent a political organization which had restored the independence of Belarus and the possibilities of democracy in the 1990s without any external support. Our declaration on the consequences of this EU policy is based on the responsibility.

The Russian language in Belarus is the language of the dictatorial Lukashenka regime. This is a method of the russification and national suppression in Belarus. We need the broadcasting in Belarusan.

We consider (and we have a practical experience) that our neighbours: Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania — could help us to organize the broadcasting to Belarus in Belarusan language. We have with them the mutual understanding and good contacts. Especially as Poland and Lithuania have just a positive experience and technical possibilities in this domain.

We hope that the European Commission would reconsider the inadequate terms of the tender and would support democratic Belarus which is struggling against the pro-Moscow occupation dictatorial Lukashenka regime as well as against its antidemocratic policy of the russification.
